Gasoline from the tank may evaporate out, lowering the mileage on the car. This problem is usually very easy to fix. If the cap is loose, the check engine light should go off a day or two after it's tightened. The smog inspection does not test a vehicle's SRS safety restraint system, ABS anti-lock braking system or anti-skid braking system, or TRC traction control system. A vehicle can pass the smog check with these lights on. The only light to make sure is not illuminated during the smog check is the check engine light or MIL malfunction indicator lamp.
