• The grey blocks are the parity bit through the array. RAID 5 takes a minimum of three drives to implement; this example uses four drives to give an easier visual comparison to RAID 6.
  • The main downsides IMO are parity writes are crazy slow (everyone has this complaint) and there hasn't been any disk re-balancing thus far. ... you have to tear down the entire volume and rebuild ...
  • If unRAID ever gets dual parity availability (maybe they have by now) then there isn't a whole lot more that FreeNAS will offer a typical home user/media server. Rebuilds are incredible tough on the remaining array and it isn't uncommon to see a cascade failure occur simply from the additional burden.

Dec 27, 2012 · Seems like - parity drives mirrored is the best solution. So if one parity drive dies - add new and re-mirror, if both die then hopefully a backup solution can resolve that. We have researched rebuild times and it does not seem to be much data. So I guess we will need to do some dry runs on scenarios and see what the results are.
Hey guys I am putting together a computer that is functionally similar to the one Linus did in his Gaming NAS video, with a UnRAID base and a copy of Windows 10 running as a VM. The issue that I am having is that the C: drive on the VM is SLOW! It takes several minutes for the VM to start up, and...

Ready for Rebuild is a bad status if you're using a parity RAID level, like 5 or 6. It means that you likely have read errors on another drive in the array... e.g. another failing drive. If the system is still online your best option is to recover data or rebuild. There's no good fix for this, and definitely not much you can do to debug.
Oct 05, 2019 · What I am find ing is that either unraid or the docker system is crippling slow, I worked out how to find the folder of music in the end and set roon to it last night, This morning its still only half way through. Its a fair amount of data but before trying unraid I used OMV and had only just set that up, and the import took about an hour. it disables the parity drive and says "read errors on parity disk". i go look on the smart report and says it's fine. i then go through and do the normal steps to re-enable the drive. stop array. remove drive from array config. start array. drive automatically gets set back to normal status. stop array. add device back as parity drive. start array
Jan 03, 2018 · I am copying the files to a spare 8TB NTFS drive and waiting for another 8TB archive drive (SMR shingle magnetic recording i think, slow to write, decent to read) to arrive for me to put into the NAS. I need to do 2 more shuffling rounds before I can use one of my 4 for parity since the SMR drive is too slow for parity. unraid parity rebuild slow, Jun 08, 2007 · When it is time to do the rebuild, all the RAID 5 choices and rebuild penalties remain.
