- May 17, 2008 · I know two-strokes burn oil, but I was wondering if the gray sludge collecting on the lower unit is normal and what this is coming from. The gas/oil mixture is relatively new. At slow speeds the engine runs cool, add to this a possible rich idle mixture and you get sludge. Check your idle mixture. Start and run the engine let it warm up.
