In electrochemical studies, a metal sample with a surface area of a few square centimeters is used to model the metal in a corroding system.Measurements can be taken at 50 feet, 100 foot or larger intervals. It does not need to be taken every 5 feet to be effective. Measurements can be taken over many types of cover including concrete, rocks, pavement, and water with no detrimental effect.
